Small parts rust removal

Saturday, 12 March 2011

I took off the number plate light and was surprised by just how rusty the lamp brackets were. I searched for rust removal on the internet and electrolysis looked like a good solution. I got a jam jar and filled it with water and some baking soda. I attached a rusty bracket to the negative cable of a battery charger and put it into the solution. The positive side of the battery charger was attached to a nail and also put into the solution. As soon as the power was switched on a surprising amount of hydrogen gas started to be produced. After a couple hours most of the rust had fallen off.

To stop the rust returning I thought I'd try to zinc plate the bracket. I bought a kit from Gateros Plating and gave it a try with good results.
